Steep Falls WMA Tree Plantation: The Covered Bridge chapter is in the process of establishing a three acre tree plantation off Rt. 114, Standish on the Steep Falls WMA. The area was mechanically mowed by the Lucas Tree Experts of Portland. This summer it will be treated with herbicide to control hardwood and forb regrowth. Following this, the area will be planted on a 10 by 10 spacing with American Chestnut grown by the Maine chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation. Other species to be planted include several types of hybrid oaks, species of red and white oak, Alleghany Chinkapin, Sweetheart Chestnut ( a cross of Chinese and American Chestnut), and other mast producing trees.
